Can drones play football? Absolutely! Drone Soccer is an emerging tech sport that combines drone piloting and football competition. The “players” are drones equipped with spherical protective cages, battling in the air within an enclosed caged arena.

Core Gameplay: Aerial Football Match
Match Format: The mainstream competition modes are 3v3 or 5v5 team battles.
Role Assignment: Each team designates 1 striker drone (the only unit eligible to score), while the rest act as defensive drones to intercept opponents, provide cover and clear paths.
Field: An indoor enclosed caged space with circular goal hoops at both ends (approx. 30cm inner diameter).
Scoring: A goal is scored when the striker drone fully passes through the opponent’s goal hoop.
Duration: Each round lasts 3–5 minutes, and most matches adopt a best-of-three format.
Piloting: Competitors operate drones on the ground via remote controllers, often paired with FPV goggles for immersive first-person flight control.

The Game “Ball”: Purpose-Built Drones
Spherical Protective Cage: Available in common diameters of 100/200/400mm, made of carbon fiber or plastic. The cage features anti-collision and anti-tangle properties to guarantee safety during matches.
FAI F9A Standard Classification
- F9A-A (5-a-side): 400mm diameter, weight ≤1200g. High speed and intense physical confrontation.
- F9A-B (3-a-side): 200mm diameter, weight ≤300g. Agile and ideal for youth participants.
- F9A-C (Beginner): 100mm diameter, weight ≤27g. Perfect for new pilots to practice basic skills.
Core Technology: Millisecond-level response, anti-interference capability, stable attitude control, and LED light strips for team identification.

Essential Rules
Offside: An offside call occurs if the striker flies past the opponent’s goal and fails to return to its own half, or drifts out of control and stays in the opponent’s zone. The drone must reset back to its home half.
Defense: Pilots may intercept and collide with rival drones, but malicious ramming and signal jamming are strictly prohibited.
Winning Condition: The team with more goals within the set time wins. If scores are tied, a sudden-death overtime round will decide the winner.
What Makes Drone Soccer So Attractive?
3D Confrontation: Teams pass, shoot and defend in three-dimensional space. It delivers more thrills than traditional football and greatly tests players’ spatial awareness.
Blend of Technology & Sports: It trains hand-eye-brain coordination, reaction speed and teamwork tactics. It has become a popular STEM education activity.
Low Entry Barrier, High Skill Ceiling: Beginners can get started quickly, while advanced players can execute sophisticated tactics and precision maneuvers.
